Research Notes:
2009. A few years after the notes below were written, I have a lot more confidence that this part of the family tree is correct. The 1788 Craig parish list shows that there is only one John Anderson and one Margaret Mearns who could have married in 1794.
Previous notes: The evidence that the John Anderson who died in 1858, aged 90, is the one who married Margaret Mearns in 1794 is circumstantial.
The 1857 death of John's son Alexander and the 1858 death of John himself were both reported by David Anderson. One was noted as John's son, but the other's relationship was not noted. Unfortunately there are no signatures by David; merely "his mark".
In 1857, at Alexander's death, his mother Margaret Mearns was deceased; and in 1858 John was a widower, but his wife's name was not recorded.
John Anderson and his son Alexander both appear in the 1841 and 1851 censuses, not in 1861. It seems that Margaret Mearns died before 1841.
Relativity:
• Proof Link: Son's death.
• Branch: Cargill.
John married Margaret Mearns, daughter of Robert Mearns and Elspeth Coul, on 10 May 1794 in Craig, Angus. (Margaret Mearns was born about 1770 in Ferryden, Angus, probably and died before 1841 in Ferryden, Angus, probably.)
